Adapters
An adapter joins two connectors face to face. A sleeve inside, usually zirconia ceramic for single-mode, lines up the two ferrules. Adapters mount in patch panels, LIUs, OTBs and splitter boxes.
The colour shows the polish: green for SC/APC and blue for SC/UPC. Use APC adapters only with APC connectors, and UPC adapters only with UPC connectors.
Fast connectors
A fast connector, also called a field-installable or pre-polished connector, has a factory-polished ferrule with a short fiber already inside. On site, the drop fiber is stripped, cleaved and pushed in until it meets that fiber, and a clamp holds it in place. No fusion splicer is needed, only a drop cable stripper, a fiber stripper and a cleaver.
Fast connectors terminate FTTH drop cable at the OTB or at the customer end. The connector has to suit the drop cable, so give its size when you ask for a quote.

Common questions
Do fast connectors need a fusion splicer?
No. A drop cable stripper, a fiber stripper and a cleaver are enough.
Can SC/APC connectors go into an SC/UPC adapter?
They fit and mate correctly, since the sleeve is the same. Keep APC in green adapters so nobody plugs a UPC connector into the other side.
